LIMONIM

Dinner Tuesday night was at Limonim (Lemons), a very lovely restaurant located in the German Quarter on Emek Refaim above the Jerusalem Khan Theater. And what a dinner it was!

The menu there is fairly eclectic. For our appetizer we had meat patties with cinnamon and in a fruit sauce. They also offer meat patties with artichokes, lamb with techina, and eggplant with minced meat and techina, just to name a few. The lamb in techina is totally delicious and son in law Yoav raved about it.

Salads there are huge affairs- the serving is large enough to serve as a complete dinner. They offer Israeli Salad, Hot Sirloin salad, Hot Chicken Liver salad with mushrooms of different types (and a most savory dish, we must add). They also offer Hot Chicken Salad.

In the meat department, they offer entrecote, Sirloin, lamb ribs in vanilla, and a hamburger. We had the Sirloin and it was soft as could be and quite good! Over the meat, they pour a tart and spicy pomegranite sauce that was really interesting, and really good. They also offer a mushroom sauce and a tamarind sauce. Among the fish dishes, they offer Salmon in Port Wine sauce.

From the wok, they offer Chicken strps with coconut sauce, chicken strips with veggies, chicken strips in olive oil, and chicken strips with lemon and mushrooms. Although we did not order dessert, the house treated us to two special desserts. The first was a spiced and hot fruit soup that was actually quite tasty. The second dessert was decadent and probably sinful, too. The dessert was coconut sorbet balls drenched with Silan (date honey) and raw techina served on a painted plate. As we said, it was to die for. We had a little itty bitty taste under the watchful eye of Tali and Yoav and his parents. They just wanted to be sure that I didn’t eat it all and leave nothing for them! What can I say? It was an amazing dessert. As we left the restaurant and waddled down the street, we realized that the temperature had dropped quite low (but not as bad as in NYC), so we hurried to the car and put the heat on! Earlier today, we had the AC on!

As we said, Limonim is located above the Khan theater. The room is lovely as it looks out over the courtyard of the theater. In warm weather there is an area abutting the restaurant for outside service that must be quite remarkable. The tables are not spaced too closely together so personal conversation is possible. The wait staff was quite attentive, outgoing, and had good answers to all of our questions. Our waiter, Fabian, was attentive to our needs and was most professional.

On the web, you can find them at www.limonim.co.il

All in all, we had a wonderful experience. Cheap it wasn’t. Worth it? Most definitely. We look forward to going back again.
